The campaign so far

How it all started
On September 3rd 2004 Tesco submitted a planning application to Norwich City Council to build a single storey Tesco Express at the former petrol station site on the corner of Unthank Road and Trinity Street, Norwich. This website and our campaign are the result of that meeting.

An extremely well attended public meeting was held in Trinity Church Hall, Cambridge Street, Norwich on Wednesday 20th October 2004 to discuss the Tesco proposal. The vast majority of over one hundred people who came along did not want Tesco to take over the site.

Over 5000 people have signed a petition opposing a Tesco store on the Unthank Road and most of the road's retailers are displaying our anti Tesco store poster.

Three years of fighting Tesco

For almost three years Tesco have blitzed the various planning authorites with a bewildering array of applications, withdrawn application and appeals against negative decisions.

Nov 2004 - Application to City Council (withdrawn by Tesco)
Mar 2005 - Application to City Council (turned down by the council)
Aug 2005 - Appeal to Central Gov't (withdrawn by Tesco)
Mar 2006 - Application to City Council (turned down by the council)
May 2006 - Appeal to Central Gov't (withdrawn by Tesco)
Aug 2006 - Application to City Council (turned down by the council)
Nov 2007 - Application to City Council (Pending)

How much public money (locally and nationally) has gone into dealing with Tesco? BBC Radio Four says a typical cost for an appeal is £0.25 million pounds. For the fifth time, staff at City Hall are looking at Tesco's attempt to put a store in the Unthank Road - even though *your* councillors have already turned down Tesco three times.

When will Tesco listen to our community and stop wasting our time and money?
